Description: MINTONS RARE VIEWS SCENE. OLD GATEWAY WINCHELSEA. 8 INCH. C1895.. ENGRAVED BY L T SWETNAM. This a very impressive print and tint tile especially as they are normally found in six inch. SIZE 8"X 8" OR 20.3 x 20.3 CM !!! These are really quite special with warm colours bringing the picture to life and framed with a gold coloured border. The view is of the old gateway in Winchelsea this is the replacement which was built in 1404 as the original was destroyed by the French in 1380 Winchelsea goes back to the medieval times and has some of the finest medieval cellars in the country dating back to about 1290 although not I'm use today. It's thought that they were mainly used for storing wine imported from France during the 13/14 century. Condition is almost perfect with just one small surface scratch near the top outside border pattern. Please check the photo's as this does help with the description.
