Large nice copper engraved map of the modern Netherlands, by Matheus SEUTTER (1678-1757). The map has been made at the period of the East India Company. It presents some towns, political boundaries, mountains, marshes, and the extensive river system in the region. With the province of Limburg. The elaborate title cartouche is surrounded by mythical figures, including Mercury, Neptune, and Minerva. At the base of the title cartouche is an Asian merchant, symbolizing the lucrative Dutch trade in the East Indies, which are depicted in an inset below the title. A fleet of Dutch galleons are illustrated at top. The distance scale supports a small inset showing the area around Maastricht. SEUTTER began his career as an apprentice under tutelage of JB Homann. Then, he left Homann to establish his own independent cartographic publishing firm in Augsburg. He was one of the most prolific Publishers of his time and was honored by the German Emperor Charles VI, with the title of "Imperial Geographer".
