From 1937 to 1939 employees increased from 202 to 408. Revenues topped 1 million, with 216 pieces of road equipment. By 1943, Great Southern had 65 terminals, 700 employees, and 332 pieces of equipment operating from Miami to Greensboro, NC. In 1951, revenues grew to $10.7 million. The company was sold to Jim Ryder for $2 million and Ryder kept the name Great Southern up until 1959, when the name was dropped in favor of Ryder Truck Lines. Ryder would grow to become the fourth largest highway carrier in the nation.
