Description: This is an authentic, original engraving by Louis Icart. Printed in France in 1924 it is titled "Le Ruban" ("The Ribbon"). (I have seen this image listed elsewhere as both "Black Lace"/"La Dentelle Noire" and "Girl With a Black Dog"/"Fille Avec un Chien Noir", but all of them seem to have "Le Ruban" written in pencil in the lower-right corner of the sheet, so that settles it.) It epitomizes Icart's Art Deco sensibilities, with a willowy, slightly nude young woman accompanied by a graceful animal. This is from 1924, which is after he returned to Paris from his first trip to the US, but just before his breakthrough success in France (and soon, everywhere). The sheet is watermarked "BFK" (for the BFK papermill of Rives, France) and measures 22-1/2" by 15". The plate impression area is 300mm x 242mm, and the image area is 286mm x 228mm. In the upper-right of the plate impression it says "Copyright 1924, Les Gravures Modernes, 194 rue de Rivoli, Paris". Icart signed it boldly in pencil in the lower-right of the impression area. To the left of it is "67". There is some disagreement over whether or not numbers like these are edition numbers or something else. There is no blindstamp impression; he didn't start using blindstamps until 1926. This is a somewhat uncommon image from Icart, but as characteristic as any. It displays very attractively, and is in good condition. The print is nicely matted and framed in an ebonized hardwood frame, behind no-glare acrylic. Please be mindful of the dimensions of the frame; this is what determines the shipping cost.
