He listened to his inner voice and began a lengthy search, working through Europe by bicycle. He sought peace in monasteries, studied Hinduism, Anthroposophy, Transcendental Meditation and was a vegetarian cook. Eventually he discovered the artist in himself and lived a half a dozen years as a hermit in the woods of Bakkeveen. His house is a cultural womb, a nursery full of self-designed furniture, clocks, boxes, and objects. Hans was an individualist. "The group kills. Individuality can only come from the collective. Within the group, the personality forms and strengthens, so that it can serve as a foundation for Individuality. Then inwardly, away from the Group, one's own ideas can develop whereupon Individuality can develop to its fullest." His individuality freed him from the collective energy. He lives not in or from the past, but always full of expectation, looking forward to building his own individual ideas. He was a self-taught multiplicity - a poet, painter, ceramist, furniture maker and chef. Hans' work is often primitive and yet very sophisticated. His figures are full of fantasy and magic and seem to defy gravity. They float and soar into themselves, human and not human in the same breath. In the early 80s, he concentrated on making small drawings. Then one thing led to another. Then paint was discovered. Hans asked a well-known artist for guidance. After some insistence, the man was willing to give him a lesson. The motto of the lesson was- "Look! Now do it! ". Hans awoke after that one lesson and a waterfall of work has followed.
