Description: DC COMICS DC's "THE PENGUIN" Set neither inside the continuity of the former mainstream cinematic Universe nor that of the DC Cinematic Universe yet to come under DC Studios Head James Gunn, director Matt Reeves' blockbuster hit THE BATMAN (2022) was a younger, grittier interpretation of DC's Dark Knight than any that have come before and, thanks in no small part to its strong writing and world-building, scored with audiences in a big way. But the greatest strength of The Batman was, quite arguably, its casting of well-known actors in roles most fans wouldn't or even couldn't suspect they'd play. Robert Pattinson's BATMAN is one example of this; another, actor COLIN FERRELL's PENGUIN. The combined strength of Ferrell and Reeves' work on the character has spawned DC's second overall cinematic project centered around a villain. Likely supported by the critical and popular reception of 2019's JOKER with Joaquin Phoenix, the Dark Knight's second most well-known villain THE PENGUIN has earned his own HBO MAX streaming series, now set for its TV premiere in late 2024. Originally one of two planned series to spin-off from The Batman, Ferrell's fowl-inspired fiend likely will be the only such series to expand the narrative of Reeves' new Bat-franchise. On their comics side, DC's super-villains have not traditionally been awarded their own ongoing titles, an early exception to this being the nine-issue Bronze Age run of The Joker (1975-1976). Time would improve the villains' publishing prowess, however. Catwoman followed The Joker with her own series beginning in 1989 and 1993, establishing herself as a successful anti-hero within the Batman family of publications. Harley Quinn (2000) would do much the same, and much more recently, Poison Ivy (2016, 2022). The Joker found newfound success in 2021, and rounding out the top Bat-baddies, The Penguin in 2011 and 2023. Moreover, one-shot specials such as the Gotham City Villains Anniversary Giant (2022) and the One Bad Day series of solo stories gave most of Batman's best-known foes eve more time to shine. If you're a fan of The Batman and his villains, or perhaps simply want to take a deeper dive into the particular fowl felony of The Penguin, then this SET OF TWO KEY ISSUES FEATURING THE PENGUIN is exactly what your collection deserves.
