Description: Pres. Andrew Johnson Pardons Rebels, Oct 1865, Harpers, ORIGINAL (25) - 11 x 16 inches approx. (typical newspaper page size). - Unfolded front page of newspaper containing two engravings, one small and one medium: 1. Andrew Johnson's Tailor shop in Tennessee; 2. Pres. Johnson pardons rebels at White House. Back side of sheet is full of news about how the southern states are responding to the Union demands and offers, following their surrender. - note: Engravings were etchings inscribed onto boxwood print blocks. The source of the etchings were pencil/charcoal sketches made by artists hired by the newspapers to visit news events on site, and sketch on an easel...with an eagle-eye view of the event. It usually took at least a week for the sketches to get to the printer's office and then get inscribed onto print blocks. Newspaper engravings may carry the name of the sketch artist and/or the head engraver, some of whom became famous. Wikipedia: "One of the most controversial uses of the presidential pardon occurred when President Andrew Johnson issued sweeping pardons to thousands of former Confederate officials and soldiers after the American Civil War officially ended on April 9, 1865. The final surrender of all Confederate troops occurred on June 2, 1865. As Johnson assumed the presidency, his attitude toward Confederate leaders seemed to signify punishment and prosecution for the rebellion. Many southern leaders fled the United States, going to Mexico, Canada, Europe and other countries. In fact, he doubled the number of exempted classes that had been exempted by Lincoln. Johnson's proclamation of May 29, 1865, for example, did not include anyone whose personal property exceeded $20,000. Several mitigating factors however led Johnson to greater clemency, such as the attitude of Lincoln for reconciliation and William H. Seward's similar leniency towards the former rebels". Condition: Very Good Condition for this antique news-sheet. Engravings show only light/very minor age-tanning, with no marks, stains, foxing, tears, or folds. Engravings are clear and unblemished. This specimen was kept with cardboard support in a poly sleeve for the past several decades, which accounts for its great condition. The engravings are collectible & frame-able. Item will be mailed in a protective poly bag, inside a crush-resistant mailing tube.
