Description: This RARE large polychrome lidded soup tureen adorned with colorful birds and flowers is a wonderful example of Aesthetic Movement design from the late 1800s in Great Britain. Produced in 1885 by Ridgways in Stoke-on-Trent, the pattern is called "Devonshire" and it features a brown transferware design with hand-colored accents of rust, yellow, blue and green. (Most pieces in this pattern are simply brown and white; it is rare to find the polychrome examples.) The big tureen with lid in place measures 7.5" by 13" with a depth of about 7". The tureen without lid is about 7" by 10.5" with a depth of 4.25". Also included is the original ladle, about 12.5" long and with a bowl that is 4.5" across. The tureen is about 139 years old but the hand-applied colors are lovely with very little loss of intensity. The pieces do show crazing and inside the bottom of the tureen there is some spiderweb crazing that is darkened. The pieces are remarkably intact for age, with handles and finial in place; there are two tiny chips on the underside of the tureen's lid. The ladle, which I believe to be original to the set, has a dark metal band where the curved handle meets the bowl. I don't know if this was added to reinforce the original ladle when it was manufactured or if this is an early repair. The Ridgways bow and arrow mark, along with the pattern name and the numbers 2302 and 688 are stamped on the bottom of the tureen. Please look closely at the photos and email me with any questions. (The Aesthetic Movement was most popular during the last decades of Queen Victoria's reign, primarily 1860-1890. The movement, which encompassed art, furniture, textiles, ceramics and more, aimed to escape the ugliness and materialism of the Industrial Age, focusing instead on producing "art for art's sake." Among the most well known names related to the movement are William Morris, James McNeill Whistler and Oscar Wilde. The European fascination with all things Japanese was revitalized during this period and those elements are evident in this ceramic pattern: the flat panel, or cartouche; asymmetric placement of design elements; natural depictions such as birds, flowers, insects, fish.)
