RICHARD FREIWALD ART POTTERY - 11 X 8 RARE RAVEN'S HEAD VASE - MOSS GREEN & BLUE

Description: This is a VERY RARE RAVEN'S HEAD VASE which was hand thrown, hand sculpted, hand carved & hand glazed multiple times by Richard Freiwald, himself. I've only seen a couple Raven's Head vases on the historical account of Freiwald's works cataloged on his "Freiwald Art Pottery" website. The raven's heads look incredibly realistic, with unique multi-layered glossy & matte glazes. The body of the vase is layered with his trademark blue-green (Granny Smith apple color) base glaze underneath layers of thick translucent crystalline drippy glaze which sparkles when intense light hits the surface. Freiwald's trademark sapphire blue starburst floral patterns randomly cover the blue-green base layer of glaze. Perfect for Halloween or all-year display as a fine & unique object of art. The Raven is an intelligent, mysterious & intimidating bird that reminds us of Edgar Allan Poe & Halloween. Ravens are complex symbols with many meanings across cultures & mythologies. They appear in Norse Viking, Ancient Greek, Celtic, Native American, and many other culture's stories. - Norse Mythology: Ravens were messengers, protectors & helpers for Odin, the Norse god of war. Odin had two ravens, Huginn & Muninn, who flew around the world each day to report back to Odin. - Greek Mythology: Ravens were messengers for Apollo, the god of prophecy. - Celtic lore: Ravens appear frequently in Celtic lore, including as the totem of Bran the Blessed, the Guardian of Britain. - Biblical lore: Ravens were the first birds that Noah sent out from the ark to find land after the floodwaters receded. Richard has earned his place within several museum collections and within many serious art collector's homes who appreciate the objects of art from the Art Nouveau (1880's through the start of WW I in 1914) and the American Arts & Crafts movements of the late 19th & early 20th centuries (about 1880 through 1920). His works can be found in many important institutional & private collections around the world. Richard's creativity and skill has won him many prestigious awards. He has been recognized for excellence within his field for several decades. You can see his biography on his website freiwaldartpottery. Take the time to review his gallery of past works. You will be amazed & enthralled by his level of technical skill, artistic talent and boundless imagination, realistic extreme attention to fine details, as well as his unique styles and ancient glazing techniques. Richard Freiwald is a master potter AND a master sculptor, which is why I have been drawn to collect his works over many years. I like his nature-based themes and his rich, drippy, multi-layered & highly textured glazing techniques. He is also somewhat of a chemist because he has spent decades researching ancient glazing techniques by experimenting with many types of chemicals, compounds, minerals & natural materials to try to re-discover lost ancient glazing techniques & effects. Besides trying to rediscover the secrets of the ancient artisans, he also enjoys discovering new unique glazing techniques & surface treatments through endless experimentation fueled by his insatiable curiosity & pursuit of beauty & perfection. Richard has a deep appreciation for the old ways, but he also loves to create new ways of expressing his art form. His love of experimentation keeps his art fresh and new, but he still has a very deep respect & admiration for the old ways which is always reflected in his works. Although he sometimes incorporates surrealism & social-political themes into his work, his greatest works seem to be inspired by his fascination with Nature in all its wondrous beauty and endless variety. My pieces have come from his Highland Park NJ studio. But he does have another newly completed studio in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, where he will continue to find endless inspiration for his works. If you have any questions or if you want to see more photos, just ask. I have an abundance of photos ready to send. This item will be double boxed and generously padded to ensure that it arrives to you in the same perfect condition in which it left my collection. Shipping charge will be higher than usual due to the large size & heavy weight of this piece. It will require a lot of protective padding & double boxing. The larger & heavier the box, the greater the charge. I will ship this USPS Priority or Fed Ex Express to shorten the time in transit to ensure it's safe undamaged arrival. If you want to drive to the Langhorne/Newtown/Yardley PA area then I will hand the piece to you without any shipping charge. I always offer a full refund if not completely satisfied for any reason, so buy with confidence. Since I've had some condition inquiries, I just want to re-iterate that this piece is in perfect Museum quality condition. It is as perfect as the day it left Richard's studio. No cracks, scratches, hairlines, flea bites, chips, stains, wear, abrasions, repairs or any other damage of any kind. This listing is for the double Ibis Skull vase only. The others in the group listing of 4 Freiwald pieces have their own separate listings and are for sale individually, not as a lot of 4.
