Description: Original offset-lithograph exhibition poster by American artist Roy Lichtenstein titled "Liberty Weekend," from 1986. Presumed limited edition. Liberty Weekend was a large arts event held in 1986 in New York City over the July 4th weekend to celebrate the 1984 restoration of the Statue of Liberty and the centenary of its unveiling in New York City. Artists including Ida Applebroog, Keith Haring, Victor Hugo, Roy Lichtenstein, Peter Max, and Robert Rauschenberg created posters and other artworks which were exhibited at Barney's and throughout Manhattan that July. This image was used for Lichtenstein's 1982 "I Love Liberty" poster which was produced in a limited edition of 5,000. American artist Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York City on October 27, 1923, and grew up on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Lichtenstein was an important figure in the emergence of Pop art, and is known for having exploited comic book imagery and visual language in his work. His earliest paintings in this idiom caused Andy Warhol to abandon his own experiments with images of superheroes taken from comic books because, Warhol concluded to Henry Geldzahler, “Roy was doing comics so well.” Lichtenstein remains among the most influential figures in American visual culture with works in the permanent collections of leading museums including the Art Institute of Chicago, Tate Modern and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, among others. This poster was printed using offset lithographic Pantone inks for color vibrancy. It was designed by Coy, Los Angeles and printed at Alan Lithograph. Sheet size: 39 x 23.5 in.
