Brief synopsis, via IMDb: A detective must adopt a rambunctious, lovable dog in order to help him find a killer. Summary from the DVD case's back cover: Academy Award winner Tom Hanks (1993, Best Actor, Philadelphia; 1994, Best Actor, Forrest Gump) stars as Scott Turner, a compulsively neat detective whose tidy world goes to the dogs when he's forced to team up with a drooling slob of a junkyard dog named Hooch. Not exactly man's best friend, Hooch turns Turner's life upside down, wrecking Turner's home, career, and budding romance. It's a hilarious nonstop test of will between this mismatched duo, leading to the most unlikely friendship you've ever seen! Turner & Hooch thrilled audiences with its offbeat blend of humor and suspense - this fast-paced box office mega hit is loads of fun! "You'll sit up and beg for more!" ~ Good Morning, America Some film background and trivia, via IMDb: Having just completed Big (1988) and The 'Burbs (1989), Tom Hanks wasn't sure he wanted to commit to the movie as he had also married Rita Wilson in-between those films and wanted to take a small break to spend time with her. However, Wilson ultimately convinced him to take the role. Hooch is a Dogue de Bordeaux, one of the most ancient French breeds. Hooch was played by multiple dogs. Beasley, a 17-month-old pup, played the main Hooch, and three other dogs. His stunt double was named Igor. Was one of director Stanley Kubrick's favorite films. Louis Gossett, Jr. was offered the role of Chief Howard Hyde but didn't want to be typecast, having previously played strict authority figures in his Oscar-winning role in An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) and the Iron Eagle franchise. He also felt uncomfortable with the character being corrupt as his previous characters, while rough around the edges, were not corrupt. Henry Winkler was originally hired as the director. But, two weeks into filming, he was fired by Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg who was dissatisfied with Winkler's work. When asked about being fired from the movie, Winkler said, "Let's just say I got along better with Hooch than I did with Turner." Having been on an acting hiatus for four years and considering giving up acting altogether this was a script written with Bill Murray in mind to make a comeback. However, Murray eventually agreed to return to acting and commitments to Scrooged (1988) and Ghostbusters II (1989) prevented him from taking the role of Turner. Also considered was Dudley Moore, who turned it down. Richard Gere was the next choice to play Turner in the event that Hanks turned down the role. Originally, the Scott Turner character was supposed to be a stereotypical slob bachelor but having played such laid-back characters at the time in Dragnet (1987), Big (1988), and The 'Burbs (1989), Hanks wanted a more challenging role. Turner was re-written to be more of an uptight neat freak. Reginald VelJohnson almost turned down the role of Sutton due to concerns of being typecast. He had played a police officer in Die Hard (1988) and had just committed to playing another cop on his long-running TV series Family Matters (1989), which debuted the same year as this movie. He was also asked to briefly reprise his role in Die Hard 2 (1990), the filming of which was to begin after this movie. Ultimately, he chose to sign on due to Hanks' popularity with Big (1988) and The 'Burbs (1989) and felt working with Hanks would be the key for a box office hit. Ernie Hudson was the second choice for the role if VelJohnson turned it down. A line from this film where Turner yells at Hooch to not eat the car was used in animation test footage for Toy Story (1995). When Tom Hanks saw the test footage, it convinced him to take on the voice role of Sheriff Woody. I happily combine multiple items for shipping.
