The French inscription around the edge is “Santa Rosa De Lima P(riez) P(our) N(ous)” which translates to “Saint Rosa Of Lima Pray For Us.” St Rose's birth name was Isabel, but she was called Rose since she was such a pretty baby. From a young age she wanted to devote her life to Christ, and she refused the attention of all suitors. In frustration her parents gave her a room where she could be alone to pray. Rose brought the sick and poor to her room to care for them and supported her family by selling her needlepoint, lace, and flowers that she grew. She joined the Third Order of St Dominic at age 20 and lived at home the rest of her life. When she died in 1617 at age 31, she had such a reputation for holiness that thousands of people attended her funeral and her coffin was carried by the town dignitaries.
