Description: The Crunch UK Weekly Comic No.5 Free Bag+Board 17 Feb 1979 ACTION/2000AD RARE DC. NICE CLEAN COPY WITH NO OBVIOUS FLAWS. THE CRUNCH THE CRUNCH IS NOW IN 1970s BRITAIN DC THOMPSON WEEKLY COMIC Of all the comic's ever released in the UK, The Crunch must be the most underappreciated. It really deserves a lot more attention, and a reappraisal of its importance is badly overdue! The vibrancy, action and violence that just jumped off the page was staggering. For some reason it totally escaped the censorship that other UK comic's in the seventies attracted like Action, and 2000AD. The Crunch was not really a competitor for Action. It's fair to say that The Bullet, was, but The Crunch was just a bit different. At times,The Crunch was just as violent as Action, most of the UK and US Government was wiped out in WHO KILLED CASSIDY, and just look at the Che Guevara look on MANTRACKERS face, aka Bearpaw Jay, as he shoots the tyres and plunges his assailants to their death. The bounty hunter really enjoyed killing them, but he smugly remarks, they could have used their brake's to stop! Totally untrue, but I wonder who drew that panel, when he said that? Totally stunning art! Do you see what I mean about the violence? It's strange that Action attracted unwanted attention from the censors, whilst in WHO KILLED CASSIDY, most of the establishment was blew up in a few pages and not a word was said! Most curious! The Crunch was not really a competitor for 2000AD also, sure it had a few Sci fi elements like the evil Dr Kyser, who cloned footballers, whilst justice department in Mega One cloned Judges. Hitler did not die in Hitler Lives, he was kept in suspended animation, to revive in the future. This story did remind me a bit of 2000AD as Hitler was a guest character quite a few times in Thargs weekly. I must mention the art in HITLER LIVES really realistic, moody and atmospheric! I wonder who it was? It looks photo realistic, Arthur Ransom, maybe? Mark Sabor kinda reminded me of Harry Twenty On The High Rock and Blackhawk, two classics from 2000AD/Tournado. It was a really interesting combination of futuristic gladiator/prison thriller. It was ultra violent also! with gory killings in almost every episode. 2000AD was an out and out sci fi comic, I'm fully aware that 2000AD had many, many other aspects. The Crunch had a few Sci fi flourishs but it was more of a mixed bag, not a sci fi comic, just a totally fascinating, readable combination, with top class art and stories that was brimming with ideas, excitement and energy! I suspect that the influence of 2000AD, Battle and Actions tough anti heroes did influence The Crunch as it had a much harder edge than D.C. Thompson's other publications, like Warlord etc. The features were also great, mainly about motor sports involving speed, and it even had a hilarious problem page, I wonder what Tharg would do if we all sent him a list of our proplems? We would get one of his famous hot shots, no doubt! I really recommend THE CRUNCH, it never should have been cancelled! Could it be relaunched? Yes, I think so! The ideas in this comic have a lot more mileage. Historical the comic is more relevant now. Many people believe that Hitler did not die in a Berlin bunker, and WHO KILLED CASSIDY is basically a review of the JFK slaying in Texas. Treat yourself to a slice of genuine ultra rare UK Comic history that will surely appreciate in value!
