It was founded by Dong Haichuan who was from Hebei Province. Wen An County in the 19th Century. Baguazhang was first heard of in around 1860 when Dong Haichuan was in prince Su's Palace. It is characterised by the principle of Using Movement as the Basis, and Changes as the Method. Technical Principles include Circle Walking, Tuming, Spiralling, Twisting, Enwrapping, Drilling, and Overturning. Fighting techniques are characterised by clever, efficient attacks whilst in constant movement: Using the Circle to get a Point; Horizontal Opening and Diagonal Entering; Using the Direct to crush the Angular; Using the Angular to bypass the Straight Line. From first hand historical sources there originally existed a total of 7 distinct styles of Baguazhang. In these 200 years two of these became well known; the Yin Style of Yin Fu which was passed down in the palace during the Qin Dynasty, and the Chen Style of Cheng Tinghua which was transmitted to the public. In hs later years Yin Fu re organised his Baguazhang method in to a set of 64 palms. Yin Style Baguazhang Series includes: Fixed Position Eight Palms (Ding Shi Ba Zhang). Eight Old Palms, Sixty Four Palms, Fist Techniques, and Kicking Techniques among others. Yin Style is characterised by movements that are Fast, Springing, Hard, and with Crisp power. The later 64 palm style has the characteristics of: Small Frame, Soft, Evasive, and Clever techniques. This series will present the Kicking Methods, Fixed Postion Eight Palms, Eight Old Palms, and perfomance sets. Each movement in each palm change contains many fighting applications and are generally trained only for that purpose. Training is done while walking the circle and the movements are performed in a continuous, flowing manner - leading to the name 'Bagua Continuous Palms' Baguazhang performance routines that are widespread today are a development of the 1960s, created by using Baguazhang movements to compose performance routines that emphasise beautiful movements and fit the technical criteria used by wushu formms judges. This basic level performance set is mainly composed of movements from the Eight Fixed Palms (DingShiBaZhang) set, as well some some of the simpler palm and kicking techniques from other palm changes. Containing a total of 62 movements, it is performed while walking the circle and is a simple routine to leam for those with some background in the basic palm changes. There are 68 movements in total; movement characteristics are: move in four directions and attack in eight, straight movements that contain a curve, circles within circles, straight movements within circles, and continuous, flowing change between them. These bring out the flavour that is unique in this martial art. Tradition has it that this set was composed and by Yin Fu during his time in the palace and passed down by his student ‘Iron Elbow' Li Yongqing. This set has a unique flavour, with continuous and varied changes as well as martial functions. When performed correctly it has the flavour of a dragon dancing in the wind, with changes that are both unqredictble and beautiful.
