Description: USS Salem is a US Navy heavy cruiser and one of the Des Moines class heavy cruisers. Des Moines-class is the last class built by the US Navy as a heavy cruiser capable of destroying high-speed cruisers of the Japanese Navy with excellent artillery capabilities as an improved version of the Baltimore class. The Des Moines-class was the first class of heavy cruisers after WWII that were not affected by the Washington Naval Treaty limits. The United States learned many lessons from the heavy cruisers of WWII and the Des Moines class would be based on the solutions to these problems The USS Salem was commissioned on 14 May 1949 with Captain J.C. Daniel. She served in the Atlantic Fleet for several years. USS Salem is the only US Heavy Cruiser currently preserved as a museum. She rests in Quincy, Massachusetts.
