Description: This listing is for one pair of US Army OPFOR (Opposing Forces) Soviet-style slip on rank insignia, worn on several types of field and combat uniform during the 1980s and 1990s. During the Cold War, the US focus was on countering aggression from the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact; therefore, OPFOR training was likewise centered around facing these type of forces. A full range of Soviet-type insignia were designed to give our opposing forces a specific look, similar to that which might be encountered by Warsaw Pact troops in a ground war in Europe. These rank insignia are factory made from olive green twill fabric with black thread embroidery. The rank is a stylized version of the Soviet equivalent of Second Lieutenant. They were typically worn slipped over the shoulder straps of specialized uniforms that featured them, but more commonly they were sewn down on US style BDUs in the shoulder position. Most commonly seen on solid, olive green uniforms of various designs, some specific units adopted camouflage uniforms of various styles, and I have also seen these sewn to three-color desert camo as well. These are originals and probably were intended for use by an OPFOR unit of the 9th Infantry Division. Pretty uncommon now. These patches, and others, came from the supply room of a sew shop that had been in business in the Fort Lewis area since the Second World War era. That business recently closed down permanently and our shop bought a substantial amount of its vintage stock, including insignia for several older units that were also disbanded. If you are buying more than one patch from us, PLEASE use the shopping cart feature. We do combine postage, so your shipping costs will not increase by much if you buy more than one patch. Please check our other auctions for more military field equipment, uniforms, helmets, hats, insignia, patches, badges, bayonets, knives, multi-plier tools, and other weapon-related gear.
