Description: Eclectic unique vintage ceramic lidded apothecary jar. Nux Vomica is the technical name for strychnine! Creamy thick bone colored vessel with ogee edges trimmed in vibrant metallic gold. This jar has a painted cartouche of green strychnine tree, its fruit and white flowers. It is marked with the abbreviation of the plant’s technical name, “Nux Vomica”. This would look awesome as part of your Dark Academia display or a dramatic, gothic decor. Eclectic, maximalist, witchy, herbalist, Halloween vibes. Measures 7 1/2” high ( with lid) by 3” diameter at its largest point. Vintage piece- I’d estimate this is from the 1950s or 60s. I also think this was made as a decor piece rather than being used for actual herbs. Faintly marked “Made in USA” on the bottom. Not chips or cracks. Strychnos nux-vomica, the strychnine tree, also known as nux vomica, poison fruit, and quaker buttons, is a deciduous tree native to India and to southeast Asia. Nux vomica has a long history of use in traditional medicine. It was first used in India as early as the 5th century BC and was later exported to Europe. In the 17th century, it was used to treat a variety of ailments including insomnia, indigestion, and nervousness. It was also used to treat snake bites and was believed to have aphrodisiac qualities.
