Description: LARGE VINTAGE MEXICAN TALAVERA BOWL Purchased in Puebla, Mexico in the 1970s. DIMENSIONS: H: 7 1/4", Diameter: Base: 5 1/4", Top: 5 3/8", Middle: 9" BACKGROUND: Talavera pottery originated in Mexico and has a rich history dating back to the 16th century. It was influenced by Spanish and Moorish ceramics and later developed its own distinctive style. Talavera is still produced today, and it remains a popular and sought-after form of Mexican folk art. Talavera pottery is primarily associated with the south-central Mexican state of Puebla. The city of Puebla de los Angeles is considered the heart of Talavera production, and it's where the tradition has been carried on for centuries. DESIGN ELEMENTS: Talavera is known for its bold, saturated colors, which are evident in the pink, blue, yellow, and green hues. The designs feature large, stylized flowers and leaves, rendered in hand-painted and freehand style [see the color bleeding at the top in the description for more information and speculation]. And the colors are applied under the glaze, giving them a smooth, glossy finish and making them durable. ***SEE PHOTOS*** Mexican Talavera ceramic bowl with a semi-spherical design. Glazed painted finish shows some crazing [intentional cracking of the glaze beneath the surface] that is NOT A DESIGN FLAW, but intended to enhance the aesthetic value of the piece. The multi-colored floral designs are beautifully-rendered throughout on a white background, with blue trim at the top. There are two places at the top where the colored blue lines bleed. These two points are equidistant on both sides and means either: 1) it was a deliberate tactic to enhance the design, or 2) someone made a mistake when applying the glaze. The bottom has some scuff marks along the edge that do not show on the outer part. There are some markings that can't be identified, along with: MEXICO, designating its place of origin. There is a 3/8" hole in the bottom for the purpose of using the bowl as a planter.
