Description: Here on offer is a wonderful antique wooden framed Prattware pot lid ‘Strasbourg’ dating to c1860. In 1835 George Baxter patented a revolutionary colour printing process that allowed him to print in large numbers quickly and cheaply. This was developed by F.W. Collins to print on pottery. This was used commercially by Felix Pratt the Staffordshire potter who produced thousands of ceramic pots featuring decorated lids. Pratt employed the engraver Jessie Austin to create the engravings of more than 450 art works used. Austin often used paintings David Teniers, the 17thC Flemish court painter who developed and specialised the peasant genre. This Staffordshire Prattware pot lid example features a view of ‘Strasbourg’, the illustration is titled and is likely to have been a Teniers painting. The pot lid retains the antique wooden frame. The lids design is in good order, there is some crazing. The wooden frame has signs of age and one of the pins holding the string has ruptured the front surface. The lid is being offered in good antique condition, it measures about 12cm in diameter, the frame is 18.8cm in diameter by 4.4cm. A wonderful collectable piece.
