This is an original 1880 3rd American Edition of Playfair's: "A Treatise on the Science and Practice of Midwifery." 183 Illustrations. two plates. 655 pp. With notes and additions by Robert P. Harris. The publisher's catalogue is bound-in after the index. The leather cover is in poor condition, with the lower inch of the back cover torn to expose the cardboard. However, the boards and pages are tight, and the pages unmarked. I rated it "fair" because of the cover; the content is "good". Please look at the photos. It measures ~ 9.25 x 6.25 x 1.75", and weighs ~ 2 lb 14 oz. William Smoult Playfair (1836-1903) was Chair of Obstetric Medicine at King's College Hospital in London for 25 years. He counted royalty among his patients. He had a good reputation as a teacher, and his treatise went through 9 British editions. It became a popular textbook in America as well. This 3rd American Edition was edited by Robert Patterson Harris (1822-1899) of Philadelphia. Harris is best known for this work, and for compiling and publishing extensive statistics about cesarean section in the USA, years before the procedure was widely performed. I will ship U.S.P.S.
