He began his ship service in March 1944. These landing craft were only 123 feet long and 23 feet wide. Quickly they shipped out to England. The ship was involved in the assault wave at Omaha Beach during the D-Day landings. They were at Dog Red They landed men from the 115th infantry regiment of the 29th division. The ship was not hit. For the next several weeks they ferried troops between England and Normandy Afterwards they were went to the Mediterranean. After practice operations they were involved in the Invasion of Southern France. In December 1944 they sailed for the USA. The end of the war saw them head to the Pacific. The war was over buy the time they reached the Pacific. Late in the year they were sent to French Indo-China (Vietnam) Their mission was to land Chinese troops to help demobilize Japanese troops in North Vietnam. The tale of [Louis R.] Harlan's transition from adolescence to manhood is related memorably in All at Sea: Coming of Age in World War II. Laced with vignettes depicting the author's naval mistakes, his escapades with and in pursuit of women, and his difficulty in returning to civilian life after the war, All at Sea is a welcome change of pace from more standard, stoic tales of wartime heroism.Harlan's frankness isn't limited to the details of his bouts with ineptitude as a young naval ensign. He also makes pointed observations about the importance of World War II compared to conflicts that have taken place since then, and about the evolution of his own racial attitudes as a product of the South suddenly thrown into settings in which he saw African Americans from a different perspective.
