Description: Two Vintage Medals Of the La Societe des 40 Hommes et 8 Chevaux (The Society of 40 Men and 8 Horses) The organization was formed in 1920 as a fun and honor society for American Legionnaires of WW1. The society is named for the form of transportation used to move U.S. troops (called doughboys) to the front. When the ship convoys arrived in France, the doughboys were taken to Vosges by rail in freight cars marked "Chevaux 8, Hommes 40" (see last 2 photos). Titles for officers in the society are taken from French titles for railroad workers and officials. The basic membership badge was the standard rectangular pendent copper with a railroad boxcar containing a soldier and a horse, while a second soldier look on, suspended by a light blue (or French blue) ribbon. The 1920s catalog called the full size medal an"issue badge" and the miniature medal a "marching badge". The most common reverse has a Jewelers Union mark; both of these have the I.J.W.U. mark (International Jewelry Workers Union). Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
